We are going to be straight with you from the start, because we think you deserve that.
Lab grown diamonds are significantly better for the environment than mined diamonds. The evidence for this is substantial and well documented. But they are not perfect, and the industry does not always tell the full story. We would rather tell you the full story and let you make an informed decision than oversimplify something this important.
Here is everything worth knowing.
What Is a Sustainable Diamond?
If we are being completely honest, the most sustainable diamond is one that already exists. An heirloom stone, a secondhand piece, a diamond that has already been mined and is simply being reset into a new piece of jewellery. That is the most environmentally sound option of all, and it is a genuinely beautiful choice.
But for couples who want a new stone and most do, for the same reason most people want a new ring rather than a secondhand one, because it feels like the beginning of something - a lab grown diamond is the next best thing. By a significant margin.
What Is Wrong With Mined Diamonds?
Diamond mining is one of the most environmentally disruptive industries on earth. The numbers are stark.
On average, mining companies move 250 tonnes of earth for every single carat of diamond extracted. The waste that builds up around mining sites — known as tailings — can remain for decades after operations close, collapsing, leaching into waterways, and making land permanently unusable.
Diamond mining uses significantly more water than lab grown production and contaminates the water sources around it. The impact on local communities, livestock, and agriculture in mining regions is severe and well documented.
Excavation destroys habitats. The removal of vegetation, displacement of wildlife, soil contamination, and noise pollution all contribute to long term biodiversity loss in mining regions. Some of the most famous diamond mines in the world have left craters so large they have been declared no fly zones.
Some diamond deposits sit on the seabed, requiring the removal of seabed matter to access them. The long term consequences of this practice are still being studied, and many environmentalists are deeply concerned about the impact on marine ecosystems that are already under significant pressure from pollution and climate change.
Beyond the environmental impact, mined diamonds carry a significant human cost. Working conditions in many mines are dangerous, with risks ranging from explosions and equipment accidents to workplace illnesses including tuberculosis and long term respiratory damage. Child labour and workforce exploitation continue to be concerns in certain regions, and despite the Kimberley Process - introduced to stem the flow of conflict diamonds - the complexity of diamond supply chains makes complete traceability genuinely difficult.
A mined diamond can pass through nearly two dozen pairs of hands before it reaches a jeweller. Knowing the full story of every stone in that chain is, in practice, almost impossible.
The Kimberley Process was a significant step forward. But it does not guarantee that a mined diamond is conflict free, ethically sourced, or environmentally sound. Complete transparency in a supply chain that long is extraordinarily difficult to achieve.

So Are Lab Grown Diamonds Actually Better?
Yes. But here is the part that most lab grown diamond retailers do not tell you.
Growing a diamond in a laboratory requires significant energy. The exact amount varies by producer and method, but it is not nothing. And the environmental benefit of a lab grown diamond depends entirely on where that energy comes from.
More than 60% of lab grown diamonds globally are produced in India and China, where coal remains the primary source of electricity. A lab grown diamond grown using coal energy has a considerably different environmental footprint to one grown using solar or wind power. The stones look identical. The environmental story behind them does not.
This is why at Ethica Diamonds we only work with producers who use renewable energy or verified carbon offsetting. We do not simply take their word for it - we ask questions, we check certifications, and we make sourcing decisions based on the answers. It takes more effort than buying from the cheapest supplier. We think it is worth it.
Not all lab grown diamonds are equal. The environmental credentials of a lab grown stone depend almost entirely on how it was grown and what energy powered that process. Always ask.
How Does Lab Grown Compare to Mined in Practice?
Research by independent consultancy Frost and Sullivan found that diamond mining produces significantly more waste than lab grown production, and uses considerably more water per carat. Lab grown production, when powered by renewable energy, produces a fraction of the carbon emissions of equivalent mined diamonds.
The comparison is not even close. Even a lab grown diamond produced using mixed energy sources performs substantially better environmentally than a mined diamond when you account for the full supply chain — exploration, extraction, transportation across multiple countries, cutting and polishing facilities, and retail.
What About Recycled and Secondhand Diamonds?
As we said at the start - this is the most sustainable option of all. If you have a family heirloom diamond, or if you are open to sourcing a secondhand stone, we would always encourage you to consider it. We can reset an existing stone into a new design through our bespoke service, giving it a completely new life in a piece made exactly for you.
It is a wonderful thing to wear a stone with history. And it is about as environmentally responsible as fine jewellery gets.
What We Do at Ethica Diamonds
Every lab grown diamond we sell is sourced from producers using renewable energy or verified carbon offsetting. Every piece of metal we use is 100% recycled gold or responsibly sourced platinum. Our manufacturing partners are certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council and audited regularly by independent third parties.
We are also a 1% for the Planet member, which means we donate 1% of our total turnover - not just our profits - to environmental causes. Every purchase from Ethica contributes directly to that.
We do not claim to be perfect. The jewellery industry as a whole has a long way to go, and we are part of that industry. But we are genuinely committed to doing this as well as it can currently be done, being transparent about where the limitations are, and pushing towards better as the technology and the standards improve.
We are based in Newquay, Cornwall, next to an ocean we care about very much. That tends to concentrate the mind.

The Bottom Line
Lab grown diamonds are better for the environment than mined diamonds. The evidence is clear. But they are not all equal, and the way a stone is grown matters enormously.
Choose a lab grown diamond from a producer using renewable energy. Choose a jeweller who is transparent about their sourcing and can tell you the story behind your stone. Choose recycled metals. And if you can, consider whether a secondhand or heirloom stone might be right for you.
These are not complicated decisions. They just require asking the right questions. We are always happy to help with that.
