The Modern Guide to Lab Grown Diamonds: Ethics, Innovation, and the Ethica Cornwall Secret
Diamonds have always been synonymous with beauty, but the way we choose them has changed. For decades, the industry was defined by a single narrative. Today, it is defined by the consumer’s appetite for transparency, sustainability, and cutting-edge science.
At Ethica Diamonds, we aren't just following the shift toward ethical jewellery; we are leading it. We’d like to introduce you to a more conscious way to sparkle: the lab grown diamond and the unique Ethica Diamond®.

Is the Lab-Grown Diamond a New Phenomenon?
While it might feel like a recent trend, the ability to grow diamonds in a laboratory actually dates back to the 1950s. However, for almost 60 years, these stones were primarily used for industrial and scientific applications - think high powered lasers and surgical tools.
It is only in the last decade that technology has reached a point where we can grow gem quality diamonds that meet, and often surpass, the desirability of mined stones. What was once a scientific feat is now a feat of fine jewellery.
What Exactly Are Lab Grown Diamonds?
In the simplest terms, lab grown diamonds (often called cultivated or man-made diamonds) are real diamonds. They consist of the same carbon atom structures as stones pulled from the earth.
Because they share the exact same chemical and optical DNA, they display the same "fire," brilliance, and scintillation. They don’t fade, they don’t cloud, and they are graded on the exact same "Four Cs" (Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat) by the same independent laboratories that grade mined stones.

The Science: HPHT vs. CVD
There are two primary ways to grow a diamond, and both require an incredible amount of energy and precision.
-
HPHT (High Pressure-High Temperature): This method recreates the "pressure cooker" environment of the Earth's crust. We place a diamond "seed" into a growth cell, heat it to 1500°C, and apply 70,000 times the pressure of sea level. The result? A diamond crystal as strong as any found in nature.
-
CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition): The modern favourite. This occurs in vacuum plasma reactors where carbon atoms are precipitated onto diamond plates, growing the stone atom by atom.
The "Investment" Myth: A Note on Value
One of the most common questions we hear is: "Is a diamond an investment?"
The truth is, unless you are buying a world-famous, ultra-rare blue diamond or a 10-carat flawless museum piece, diamonds are rarely a financial investment. If you buy a mined diamond at retail and try to sell it back to a jeweller, you will often find its "resale" value is a fraction of what you paid - sometimes as low as 25%.
At Ethica, we believe the true value of a diamond lies in the emotional legacy and the conscious choice you make. By choosing lab grown, you are getting a larger, higher-quality stone for your budget without the environmental or ethical "tax" of mining.
What Sets the Ethica Diamond® Apart?
You might notice we talk about the Ethica Diamond® specifically. While we love all lab grown stones, we wanted to offer something that wasn't tied to the traditional diamond industry’s pricing structures.
Most lab diamonds are priced based on the "Diamond Pricing Index" a system managed by the very cartels that control the mines. We chose a different path.
The Ethica Diamond® is:
-
Independently Priced: Based on the cost of production and research, not an artificial market price.
-
Technologically Advanced: Grown by market leaders in gemstone science with a focus on minimal environmental impact.
-
Consistently Elite: Every Ethica Diamond is a Type IIA - the rarest and most brilliant category of diamond (think the Koh-i-Noor or the Elizabeth Taylor diamond). Only 1-2% of mined diamonds reach this level of purity.
A New Era of Brilliance
Choosing an engagement ring or a bespoke piece of jewellery should be an inspiring experience, free from "rocks and shoals." Whether you choose a classic CVD lab diamond or our signature Ethica Diamond®, you are choosing a future where luxury is kind, conscious, and cutting-edge.
