The engraving inside a ring is one of the most overlooked and most personal details of the whole process. Nobody will ever see it except the two of you. It sits quietly on the inside of the band, completely hidden from the world - which is precisely what makes it so meaningful.
We love helping our customers think through what to engrave. It is one of those decisions that sounds small until you sit with it, and then suddenly feels enormous. Here is everything you need to know - from the practical to the personal.
The Practical Bits First
How much space do I have?
This depends on the width and circumference of your band. A narrow band on a smaller ring size has considerably less space than a wider band on a larger size. As a rough guide, most engagement rings can accommodate between 15 and 25 characters comfortably - including spaces and punctuation.
When you order with Ethica, just let us know what you would like engraved and we will advise on whether it fits. We would always rather tell you early than try to squeeze something in that does not sit right.
What font styles are available?
Most engravers offer a choice of script styles - typically a classic serif, a flowing script, and a block print. Script tends to feel the most romantic and is the most popular choice for engagement rings. Block print is cleaner and more contemporary. Classic serif sits somewhere between the two.
If you have a specific style in mind, ask us and we will do our best to match it.
What about symbols?
Small symbols - a heart, a diamond, an infinity sign, a star, a small floral motif - can be engraved alongside or instead of text. These work particularly well when combined with initials or a date, adding a visual element that text alone cannot.

The classic choice and still one of the most beautiful. Clean, timeless, and completely personal without requiring explanation to anyone.

If you want to make initials feel a little more considered, engraving them in a specific order - her initials first, his second, or intertwined can add a layer of meaning that is entirely yours.
The Date
The proposal date, the wedding date, the date you first met, or the date of something only the two of you know about. Dates are beautiful because they hold an entire story in a handful of numbers.

A combination of initials and date is probably the most commonly requested engraving we do - and there is a reason for that. It is complete. It says who and when in the smallest possible space.
A Word or Short Phrase
A single word that means something to the two of you. A phrase from a song, a book, or a conversation that you have never forgotten. Something that only makes complete sense to you.

Short phrases work best when they are genuinely yours rather than borrowed from somewhere obvious. The most memorable engravings we have seen are the ones that would make no sense to a stranger but make perfect sense to the two people involved.
A Location
Where you met. Where the proposal happened. Where you went on your first date. A place that holds a specific meaning in your story.

Several of our customers have engraved the coordinates of a meaningful place - the exact latitude and longitude of where they got engaged, for example. It is a beautiful detail that is entirely invisible to everyone else.
Something in Another Language
A phrase in the language of a country that means something to you. A word from a culture you share. Something that feels like a small private world inside a small private space.
Ti amo - I love you in Italian
Pour toujours - forever in French
Mo ghrá - my love in Irish
If one of you has a heritage or a language that feels important to honour, an engraving is a beautiful way to do it.
An Inside Joke or Reference
Do not underestimate this one. Some of the most meaningful engravings we have ever seen are things that would mean absolutely nothing to anyone else - a reference to a shared joke, a line from a film you have watched forty times, a word that became shorthand for something only the two of you understand.
The ring is the most personal piece of jewellery either of you will ever own. The engraving does not need to be poetic or profound. It needs to be true.
The best engraving is the one that makes the person receiving the ring smile immediately - not because it is beautiful, but because it is completely, unmistakably, perfectly theirs.
What About Engraving Wedding Bands?
Everything above applies equally to wedding bands and because wedding bands tend to have slightly more surface area than engagement rings, you often have a little more space to work with.

If you are having a bespoke ceremony with a celebrant, there is often a particular line or phrase that feels like the heart of the whole thing. That is worth writing down on the day, even if you are not planning to engrave immediately, you can always add an engraving to a ring after the wedding.
A Few Things to Avoid
These are not rules - they are just observations from years of helping people with this decision.

Very long phrases rarely work well. What reads beautifully in a greeting card often feels cramped and illegible inside a band. If you are not sure, ask us to show you how it would sit before committing.

Spelling out names in full is lovely but takes up considerably more space than initials. Make sure you know your character count before deciding.

Engraving is permanent. We can sometimes add to or alongside an existing engraving, but removing one is not straightforward. If you are not completely sure, take a little more time. There is no rush.
Can I Add an Engraving After I Have Received the Ring?
Yes, we can arrange engraving after the fact, either at the time of purchase or further down the line. Some customers choose to engrave the wedding date into the engagement ring after the ceremony, which is a lovely way of connecting the two moments.

This is actually one of the most common things people ask us about in consultations. It is a surprisingly tricky decision for something so small.
Our advice is always the same: do not try to make it perfect. Try to make it true. A date, a place, a word, a set of initials - any of those things, chosen because they mean something specific to the two of you, will be exactly right.
