Bespoke Jewellery in Cornwall: Creating Your Ring at Ethica Diamonds

Behind the Design: The Bespoke Process at Ethica Diamonds

A bespoke piece of jewellery is more than a choice; it is a collaborative process. While many high-street jewellers offer "customisation," our bespoke service at Ethica Diamonds is a true design partnership. We blend years of design experience with modern sustainability technology to create the next generation of heirlooms.

Below, we outline the three-step journey from initial concept to the finished piece.

The Consultation: Defining the Concept

Every project begins with a conversation. Whether in our Newquay boutique or via a virtual appointment, we sit down with you to discuss your inspiration. We look at stone shapes, metal preferences, and the practicalities of how the piece will be worn.

Whilst I have designed unique pieces of jewellery with the clients hobbies and passions being the only brief, it’s always very helpful if a customer has a vague idea of what they are looking to create. The below pointers are a great place to start:

- Design inspiration images are invaluable. Google and Pinterest are your friends. Show me things you like and what you don’t like.

- Is there a particular sentimental or emotional message you want the piece to convey? Is there a story we are telling?

- Do your research if you can. If the piece is not for you, try to find out your loved ones metal colour preferences. Do they like coloured stones? Do they have a favourite cut of diamonds?

The Design: Precision and Visualisation

Once the direction is clear, we move into the technical design phase. This involves creating detailed drawings or 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) models. This step is vital because it allows you to see the exact proportions and architecture of the ring before any metal is cast.

We refine these models together, ensuring that the design is not only beautiful but durable enough to last a lifetime.

The CAD images are such an important part of the process; they solidify our vision and enable you to see exactly what I have been describing with words or sketches. CAD renders will show exactly the proportions and shape of your piece, they will hopefully give you confidence in your design and the process itself; whether we have met in person or just virtually.

The Craft: Heritage Meets Innovation

The final stage is where our master goldsmiths bring the digital design into reality. We use recycled precious metals and hand-selected, ethically grown stones, whether that is a responsibly grown lab diamond or a nature-identical gemstone like an emerald or ruby.

Every piece undergoes a final inspection in our studio to ensure it meets our standards for brilliance and structural integrity.

Unwrapping the finished piece on its return from the workshop always holds something magical for me. Seeing that design brought to life and knowing what it will mean to its recipient is very special and I feel privileged to be a part of the journey.

Because of how special these bespoke creations are we obviously check them over thoroughly to ensure that all of those tiny, sentimental design elements are exactly as desired. Design is however never considered above durability so each ring will undergo many checks to ensure it is perfect before being sent out.
